No-BS Supplements That Give Your Doggo the Shiniest, Healthiest Coat

No-BS Supplements That Give Your Doggo the Shiniest, Healthiest Coat

For the longest time, it’s been believed that cracking a raw egg into your pup’s breakfast or dinner would result in a healthy, shiny coat. Same goes for making them some scrambled eggs or an omelette, but many in the dog community believe raw egg is best — although it does come with risks. Just like humans, dogs can get salmonella from a raw egg, and nobody wants a sick doggo.

Luckily, there are so many other healthy and safe supplements that contain the healthy fats dogs need in order to round out their diet as well as support skin and fur health. Personally, I’ve been trying different things with my pooch. She has a lovely, black shiny coat and has been benefiting from a mix of an occasional raw egg, leftover scrambled eggs from breakfast (although I’m not ashamed to admit I’ll make my girl her own fancy scramble every now and then) and supplements that contain all kinds of good ingredients that promote a shiny, healthy coat — and more! Since she’s a large breed, I love supplements that also support joint health, so that she can avoid hip problems in the future.

Here are the best supplements I found on Amazon with the highest reviews coming from happy customers. There are so many to choose from, so I’ve done the work for you and compiled the very best, trustworthy products you can feel good about giving your doggo.

1. Zesty Paws Pure Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, $34.97

This Salmon oil comes in liquid form, so all you need to do is add it to their food (whether it’s kibble, wet, or raw). Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil is a “natural fish oil additive supplement that supports the skin, coat, hips and joints, heart and immune system.” So not only are you giving your pup the most beautiful coat, but you’re contributing to their overall health as well. This particular product has over 6,300 ratings with 4 ½ stars. Zesty Paws also offers the same thing in dog treat form.

2. Mighty Petz Fish Oil for Dogs Omega 3 Chews, $29.97

Mighty Petz fish oil chews are perfect for overall immune and joint health, along with giving your pup the proper nutrients they need for a healthy coat. Moreover, the ingredients in these chews help with itching due to allergies. Made in the USA, this is a fish oil supplement you can definitely trust — not only are they manufactured in a GMP-certified facility and 3rd party tested, but they’re never ever made with chemicals, pollutants, toxins, mercury, PCBs, or heavy metals.

3. Natural Dog Company Skin & Coat Omega Supplement Chews, $24.95

This is one of my personal favorite brands (I have a salve that I use on my pup’s hot spots and it helps her heal very quickly). These chews contain fatty acids like Omega-3s, EPA, and DHA. This is another good supplement to give your pup a healthy, shiny coat as well as relieve itching (usually due to seasonal allergies). Plus, the chews are delicious and can be used as a treat for good behavior.

4. Salveo Petcare Omega 3 Fish Oil, $16.53

This supplement comes in pill form, so if your pupper is suspicious of pills, you can use pill pockets (like Greenies chicken flavor pill pockets dogs love) or using a special treat like cream cheese or peanut butter (but please check with your vet first — some pups are sensitive to dairy and sugary peanut butters). The ingredients include extracts from wild anchovies, sardines and mackerel, and their clean and natural. The supplements also promote joint, heart, health, and brain function.

5. PetHonesty Skin Health Supplement Chews, $25.99

PetHonesty’s product helps alleviate chronic skin and coat issues (like itchiness, hot spots, and excessive shedding) while also giving your pup a shiny mane. PetHonesty’s goal is to “fight skin issues from the inside out by addressing the root cause,” which the brand believes comes from inadequate nutrient absorption, which happens sometimes. The supplement includes powerful, all-natural ingredients including flaxseed, vitamin E, probiotics, DHA, fish oil, and more. It’s also free of GMOs, corn, soy, and preservatives. Plus! Your pup will love the taste and be more than happy to have it as a “treat.”

6. Cloud Star Dynamo Dog Skin Soft Chews, $12.89

These supplements contain all the good stuff for skin and coat health: salmon, salmon oil, and vitamin E. This product is especially good for senior dogs. Plus, the price is a bit more budget-friendly, and a great place to start if you’re new to skin and coat supplements.

 7. Nordic Naturals Omega 3 Fish Oil, $13.56

Another more budget-friendly option (with over 1,000 reviews and a 4 ½ star rating), this is an oil you can add to your pooch’s everyday meals. The ingredients include wild caught and sustainably sourced fish oil (derived from anchovies and sardines)  that comes from the freshest catch and clean waters. Nordic Naturals also uses a third party to test for purity and freshness, and the oils are human-grade — the same fish oil that we take as supplements for our own health!
